4 Cocktail Kits to Try at Home

Life Entertained

July 11, 2020

It’s no secret that I am a huge lover of cocktails. I love the mix of flavors, beautiful garnishes, and the creativity in trying new recipes! While restaurants and bars are starting to open up outside it’s still the perfect time to try out new, exciting cocktails in the comfort of your own home.

I’ve done the research for you and found my favorite 4 curated cocktail kits that are worth trying (and stayed tuned – I chose 2 to test myself and will provide my honest review)!

*Note: some of these kits contain alcohol or provide the option to chose whether or not it’s included.

1. Shaker & Spoon

Cost: $50 (as low as $40 with annual membership)
Purchase options: Subscription (can skip or cancel anytime)
Alcohol included: No
Who this is perfect for: Someone who doesn’t necessarily want to be surprised, but still to try out a variety of cocktails!

First I love that the creators of this company are from Brooklyn (a little biased, I admit!). Each box is centered around one type of spirit and contains really unique, high-quality mixers and garnishes. Also, this is the one box that does not come with alcohol, although that’s how they’re able to keep their price down! Some of the amazing features include:

  • Enough ingredients to craft 12 cocktails – 4 servings for 3 different drinks (making this a great option if you love trying new things!).

  • You know what you’re getting beforehand: while I do like surprises, I’m also picky about my liquor – for that reason, I like that you know what your next month subscription will be in advance (e.g. centered around vodka, tequila, whiskey, etc.) in case you want to skip!

  • They provide videos on how to make each cocktail (watch here).

2. Cocktail Courier

Cost: Varied by cocktail + quantity
Purchase options: Subscription (can skip or cancel anytime) or one-time purchase
Alcohol included: Sometimes optional
Who this is perfect for: Someone who wants to be able to choose their own cocktail and receive serving-sized ingredients

The unique quality about this kit is that you have the ability to purchase a specific cocktail! These kits can be purchased as a subscription (saving you 20%) where you can select the spirit and a personalized box will be shipped to you; alternatively, they also offer the option to pay by kit for a specific cocktail, and there are so many to choose from!

Here’s what I love about it:

  • Many cocktails they offer allow you choose how many servings you’d like to receive, making it perfect for a couple at home! Plus, some have alcohol included so you’ve got the full package!

  • They also sell fun extras like barware and garnishes (rimming salts, specialized sugar cubes, and dried fruit)! I personally LOVE that because those can be so hard to find! And you’re definitely not going to see me dehydrating fruit anytime soon!! Ha!

  • Each cocktail information page includes details on the taste scale, skill level required, prep time, and prep time.

3. Crafted Taste

Cost: Varied by cocktail + quantity
Purchase options: Subscription (can skip or cancel anytime) or one-time purchase
Alcohol included: Optional
Who this is perfect for: Someone who wants to be able to fully customize their kit and doesn’t mind spending a little extra for full-size bottles!

This company seems very similar to Cocktail Courier, in that they offer both subscription and one-time cocktail purchases. Each Crafted Taste kits gives you the choice to select mixers only (no alcohol), a full kit, or a premium kit.

Some of their awesome features include:

  • The ability to select whether or not to include alcohol (including top-shelf) in both subscription boxes and individual kits in their online shop.

  • While their price tag is definitely a bit higher, one plus is that all their mixers are full-size, which is perfect if you already know it matches your taste and you’ll be able use many times more in the future! If you choose a “with alcohol” kit, they’re also a full 750ML.

4. Saloon Box

Cost: $49-53 for subscription service; various for individual sets
Purchase options: Subscription (can skip or cancel anytime) or one-time purchase
Alcohol included: Optional
Who this is perfect for: Someone who wants to be able to experiment with many new cocktails each month!

The Saloon Box offers three types of subscription services (3, 6, or 12 month pre-pay), which could be a downside for some if you’re not interested in receiving a minimum of 3 kits. However, with each box containing 6 recipes and a serving size of 2 each, it’s perfect for the couple or friends wanting to try new recipes!

  • Similar to the previous three, you have the option to choose with or without alcohol for the subscription boxes (and some individual non-renewal kits).

  • Because each box contains 6 recipes, their serving-sized mixers and spirits are perfect so you won’t have to deal with bottles and bottles of leftovers (particularly if you weren’t a fan of some of the drinks!).
